Delhi On Orange Alert: IMD Warns Of Heavy Rain, Waterlogging, And Gusty Winds

An orange alert has been issued in Delhi, advising authorities to stay prepared to respond to any potential emergencies, as more rainfall is expected in the capital following light to moderate showers early Thursday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that heavy rainfall is also likely in isolated parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) due to a depression advancing toward the area.

This system is expected to bring the risk of waterlogging across various localities. Safdarjung, which is considered a key representative of Delhi's weather, recorded 16.3 mm of rainfall over the 24-hour period that ended at 8:30 am., as reported by Hindustan Times.

The rain had a significant cooling effect, causing the minimum temperature to plummet to 23.1°C, which is three degrees below the seasonal average. Despite the overcast conditions, the mercury was predicted to rise to around 30°C throughout the day.

The IMD, in an early Thursday morning update at 5:30 am, reported that the depression was currently positioned over northwest Madhya Pradesh and parts of southwest Uttar Pradesh. This weather system had been moving at a slow pace, averaging 8 kilometers per hour over the past six hours.

It is forecasted to continue moving slowly in a north-northeast direction over the next 24 hours. The system remains under constant observation through Doppler Weather Radars stationed in Delhi and Lucknow to monitor any developments closely. Widespread rainfall is anticipated due to the depression, with gusty winds expected to blow at speeds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h in Delhi and surrounding areas, as reported by Hindustan Times.

These conditions are forecasted to persist until Friday. Regarding rainfall distribution, Safdarjung recorded 16.3 mm of rainfall, while other areas of Delhi experienced varying amounts of precipitation. Palam received 8.5 mm of rainfall, Lodhi Road recorded 16 mm, Ayanagar received 15.7 mm, Pitampura recorded 13.5 mm, and Mayur Vihar received 13 mm of rainfall during this period.

As of now, Delhi has accumulated a total of 96.2 mm of rainfall in September. The monthly long-period average for this time is 123.4 mm, indicating that further rain may help close the gap as the month progresses, as per media reports. The IMD has cautioned the public about possible disruptions due to waterlogging and gusty winds, and authorities are on alert for any potential emergencies caused by the adverse weather conditions.
