Rekha Gupta To Take Oath Today
50-year-old Rekha was elected as the Leader of the House in the Delhi Assembly at the BJP legislature party meeting in the presence of senior BJP leader Ravishankar Prasad, and OP Dhankar who were the party's two central observers. Once the party announced the name, Gupta, accompanied by Prasad, Dhankar and Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva among others, met Lt Governor VK Saxena and staked claim to form the government.
She defeated AAP candidate Bandana Kumari by over 29,000 votes in Shalimar Bagh. She will take the oath of office at a grand ceremony at the Ramlila ground today. She is set to become the fourth woman chief minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj(BJP), Sheila Dikshit(Congress) and Atishi(AAP).
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet colleagues, and the chief ministers of NDA-ruled states are expected to attend Rekha Gupta's oath-taking ceremony.
The BJP's decision to appoint Gupta as chief minister is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its appeal among women voters. She will be the only woman chief minister in a BJP-led government and the second in the country after Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal.
A law graduate from Delhi University with deep RSS ties, Gupta is making her Assembly debut but has been in politics since 1992 when she joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Originally from Julana, Haryana, she belongs to the Baniya community and has a 32-year association with the RSS.
Gupta has served as a Delhi civic councillor and was previously the president of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU). Actively involved in women's issues, she is also the national vice president of the BJP Mahila Morcha and a member of the party's national executive.
In the 70-member assembly, the BJP emerged victorious winning 48 while the AAP got 22 seats and the Congress drew a blank.
