Delhi Issues Guidelines To Combat HMPV And Respiratory Illnesses

In light of increasing respiratory illness reports, Delhi has issued new health guidelines to tackle the potential risks associated with Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and other respiratory infections.

These measures aim to strengthen preparedness as concerns about rising cases of HMPV emerge globally.

Proactive Health Discussions Led by Dr. Vandana Bagga

Dr. Vandana Bagga, the Director General of Health Services in Delhi, spearheaded meetings with chief district medical officers and the state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) officer. The discussions were focused on improving the city's readiness to deal with respiratory illnesses, including the increasing presence of HMPV, which has been detected in other countries.

Key Reporting and Isolation Protocols for Hospitals

The newly issued advisory mandates hospitals to report cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) through the IHIP Portal. The health department has stressed the importance of promptly isolating suspected cases and following established safety measures to prevent cross-contamination and further outbreaks.

Documentation and Tracking for Accurate Data

To ensure a comprehensive response to respiratory illnesses, hospitals are now required to follow strict documentation protocols for SARI cases and laboratory-confirmed influenza. This will enable accurate tracking of infection trends, facilitating swift intervention and analysis.

Medication and Treatment Measures for Mild Cases

Hospitals have been instructed to keep essential medications on hand to treat mild respiratory cases. This includes paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, cough syrups, and oxygen. The goal is to ensure that the healthcare system can efficiently manage and treat cases as they arise, minimizing strain on medical resources.

Response to Global Respiratory Illness Outbreaks

These guidelines come as part of a broader effort to tackle rising respiratory health concerns, particularly after reports of HMPV outbreaks in China. With these preventive measures in place, Delhi is preparing to manage the potential health risks posed by respiratory viruses and maintain the safety of its population.
