Delhi High Court Grants Bail To Wrestler Sushil Kumar In Murder Case

Wrestler Sushil Kumar, who is locked in Delhi's Tihar jail in connection with a junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar's muder case, got regular bail from the Delhi High Court on Tuesday. Earlier in July 2023, Sushil Kumar received a seven-day interim bail for knee surgery.

According to the charge sheet by Delhi Police, Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar and his associates allegedly attacked Sagar Dhankar and two friends, Sonu and Amit Kumar. The incident occurred on the night between May 4 and 5, 2021. Tragically, Sagar later died from his injuries.

Details of the Incident

A video circulated on social media purportedly shows Kumar and others assaulting another individual with sticks. The police investigation revealed that Sagar and his friends were kidnapped from different locations in Delhi. They were then taken to a stadium where the gate was locked, and security guards were dismissed.

The police's final report, spanning 1,000 pages, detailed how all victims were encircled at the stadium. They were brutally beaten with 'lathis', 'daands', hockey sticks, baseball bats, and other weapons for about 30 to 40 minutes.

Underlying Disputes

The investigation uncovered that both groups of wrestlers were involved in illegal activities related to disputed land. These activities included buying, selling, occupying land, and extortion. It also emerged that both camps had connections with gangsters Kala Jathedi and Neeraj Bawania.

Sushil Kumar's alleged assault on former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar stemmed from an alleged property dispute. The incident took place at a stadium in May when Kumar reportedly attacked Dhankar and his friends.

This case highlights the complex web of relationships between wrestlers and criminal elements in Delhi.
