Delhi Flood Chaos: Yamuna Bank Metro Station Cut Off, Waterlogging Cripples NCR Traffic

Heavy rains and the rising water level of the Yamuna river on Thursday left the Yamuna Bank Metro Station inaccessible, severely affecting services for commuters. The entry gates of the station had to be shut after floodwater submerged the road leading to the metro premises. In some cases, boats were reportedly used in attempts to access the station. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also reached the spot to assist commuters stranded in the area.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) clarified that while the station remained operational with interchange facilities available, the approach road was cut off due to the inundation. "Due to the escalating water levels of the Yamuna River, the approach road leading to the Yamuna Bank Metro Station is currently inaccessible. Kindly plan your journey accordingly and consider alternate routes," DMRC posted on X.

Several Areas of Delhi-NCR Waterlogged

Alongside Yamuna Bank, multiple parts of Delhi and its neighbouring regions reported severe waterlogging as the Yamuna continued to flow above the danger mark. Among the worst-affected locations were Monastery Market, Kashmere Gate, Vikaspuri, Shankar Vihar, Secretariat underpass, Civil Lines, and Ring Road.

Noida and Ghaziabad also witnessed widespread waterlogging, leading to massive traffic jams. Commuters reported that vehicles were reduced to crawling speeds, especially during peak hours on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

Traffic Jams Across Key Routes

Floodwater from the Yamuna created huge traffic snarls in several parts of the capital. Major stretches at Kashmere Gate, Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, and Kalindi Kunj were submerged, forcing the traffic police to impose diversions. Officials confirmed that many commuters were stuck for hours, with even short distances of two kilometres taking unusually long to cover.

As a result, several people turned to Delhi Metro services to avoid the chaos, leaving their vehicles at home.

A traffic police official stated, "Congestion was reported at Kashmere Gate, along the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road, and near Kalindi Kunj where waterlogging was severe. Diversions were made to regulate vehicular movement."

Traffic Advisory Issued

In response, the Delhi Traffic Police issued a travel advisory, particularly for commuters heading from Chandgi Ram Akhara towards Rajghat. Vehicles have been instructed to take Signature Bridge, then Pusta Road and Raja Ram Kohli Marg before proceeding further. This diversion, officials said, was designed to ensure smoother traffic flow and minimize congestion.

Authorities Urge Commuters to Avoid Flooded Stretches

Commuters have been advised to avoid flood-affected stretches altogether and use Delhi Metro where possible. Public Works Department (PWD) officials attributed much of the waterlogging to seepage problems rather than direct inflow from the Yamuna. "This is rainfall water that is taking longer than usual to clear due to seepage conditions and the Yamuna outlet being closed," a PWD official said.

Despite this, residents and commuters shared videos showing Yamuna water spilling onto Mudrika Marg (Ring Road), extending from Majnu Ka Tila through Chandgi Ram Akhara up to Nigam Bodh Ghat.

The ripple effect of traffic congestion was felt in adjoining areas, with long tailbacks on routes connecting to Wazirabad, ISBT, Sarai Kale Khan, and Ashram. For now, the traffic police have advised citizens to follow real-time updates on its social media platforms before stepping out.
