When Will BJP Release Its First List Of Candidates For Delhi Elections 2025?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ramping up its preparations for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. On Wednesday, the party unveiled a 21-member State Election Committee responsible for screening potential candidates. This move signifies a step forward in their election strategy.

While both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress have already announced their candidate lists, BJP has yet to name any candidates. AAP has declared candidates for all 70 assembly seats, whereas Congress has announced candidates for 21 seats so far. The BJP's delay is attributed to changes within the state unit and the ongoing Parliament session.

Delhi Elections 2025 When Will BJP Release Its First List Of Candidates

Candidate Selection Process

A senior BJP leader mentioned that the first list of at least 25 candidates might be released by December 25, according to a report in Business Insider. "The first list of at least 25 candidates could be announced on, or by, December 25. BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh has issued directions to ensure that this is done without any more delay," they stated.

The process of finalising candidates involves more than just forming a State Election Committee. After this, a Core Committee will be established to further evaluate potential candidates. Ultimately, the Central Election Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will make the final decision, the report added.

Challenges in Candidate Selection

The BJP faces challenges due to an abundance of aspirants in several assembly seats. This situation arises from new members joining from other parties and existing members staking claims. Key contested areas include Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi and Vishwas Nagar in East Delhi.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently led a meeting focused on election preparations with BJP Delhi president Virendra Sachdeva and Baijayant Panda, who is in charge of Delhi for the party. Following this meeting, the State Election Committee was announced.

Committee Composition

Besides Virendra Sachdeva's predecessor Adesh Gupta, notable leaders like Manoj Tiwari, Satish Upadhyay, and Dr Harsh Vardhan are part of the committee. Dr Harsh Vardhan stands out as the only former MP on this panel.

The BJP's candidate announcement delay is partly due to internal restructuring within its state unit. Additionally, ongoing parliamentary sessions contribute to this postponement as well.

The BJP aims to release its initial candidate list by December 25 as part of its strategic planning for the elections. This timeline aligns with directives from senior party leadership to expedite the process efficiently.
