Delhi Elections 2025: New Delhi Constituency Sees 23 Candidates In Intense Battle
In the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, 719 candidates will compete for 70 seats, as confirmed by the Election Commission of India. This announcement comes after a rigorous process of nomination filing and scrutiny, with 981 candidates initially throwing their hat in the ring. The screening, which took place on January 18, saw 1,040 nominations being accepted, while 477 were rejected. This meticulous process underscores the competitive nature of the elections scheduled for February 5.

The New Delhi assembly constituency is witnessing the highest number of contenders, with 23 candidates vying for the position. This seat is particularly notable as former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is competing against the progeny of two previous Delhi CMs: BJP's Parvesh Verma and Congress' Sandeep Dikshit. On the other end of the spectrum, Patel Nagar and Kasturba Nagar constituencies have the least number of candidates, each with only five people running. This variance highlights the diverse political battleground across the national capital.
The election fever in Delhi is escalating, with the major political parties, AAP, BJP, and Congress, engaging in a war of words. As the poll date approaches, the anticipation among the voters and the candidates alike is palpable. These elections are of significant importance, given the historical context. The Congress party, once a dominant force in Delhi politics for 15 consecutive years, has seen a dramatic decline, failing to secure any seats in the last two assembly elections. Conversely, the AAP achieved a landslide victory in the 2020 elections, securing 62 of the 70 seats, leaving the BJP with a mere eight.
The nomination process itself was a testament to the heightened political activity in the region, with the maximum number of nomination papers filed in the New Delhi Assembly Constituency.
A total of 29 candidates submitted 40 nomination papers for this seat alone. In stark contrast, the Kasturba Nagar Assembly Constituency saw the minimum, with six candidates filing a total of nine nomination papers. From Kasturba Nagar, AAP has fielded Ramesh Pahalwan, BJP has presented Neeraj Basoya, and Congress has nominated Abhishek Dutt.
