Delhi Election: BJP Promises To Continue AAP's Welfare Schemes After Forming Govt

With the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) welfare-driven agenda central to its political identity, its defeat in the 2025 Delhi elections is likely to spark questions about the future of its signature initiatives, such as free water, free electricity, and other subsidies.

The AAP secured just 22 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections of 2025, the results of which were counted on February 8. This marks a significant decline from its 2020 performance, where it won 62 seats.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has staged a remarkable comeback in the Capital, winning 48 of the 70 seats, ending a 26-year hiatus from power.

What will happen to AAP's schemes now?

In its election manifesto, the BJP pledged to continue the existing schemes in Delhi, reported the Hindustan Times.

"Our government will not only continue the existing schemes but will also make them more effective by eliminating corruption in these schemes," the BJP said in its manifesto.

The outgoing AAP government had proposed several new welfare measures during its campaign, in addition to its ongoing initiatives such as improved government schools, mohalla clinics, and the free electricity programme for Delhi residents.

Key BJP promises

The BJP has promised to provide ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance to women from impoverished families under the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana.

In its manifesto, the BJP also promised ₹21,000 and six nutritional kits to every pregnant woman under the Mukhya Mantri Matritva Suraksha Yojana.

Women from low-income families will be offered LPG cylinders for ₹500, with one free cylinder given away during Holi and Diwali.

The BJP has stated that in its first cabinet meeting, it will implement the central government's Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which offers free treatment up to ₹5 lakh. Additionally, the state government will provide ₹5 lakh more in coverage for poor families.

Under Ayushman Bharat, all senior citizens aged 70 and above will receive free treatment up to ₹5 lakh, with an additional ₹5 lakh from the state. Free OPD and diagnostic services will also be available.

Pensions for senior citizens aged 60-70 will rise from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500, while those aged 70 and above, along with widows, divyang, and destitute individuals, will see their pensions increase from ₹2,500 to ₹3,000.

The BJP has promised to empower Delhi's youth for various competitive exams by offering one-time financial assistance of ₹15,000, reimbursing travel costs to examination centres, and covering application fees for up to two attempts.

The party will launch the Dr BR Ambedkar Stipend Scheme in Delhi, providing a monthly stipend of ₹1,000 to Scheduled Caste students pursuing technical and vocational courses in ITIs, skill centres, polytechnics, and more.
