According to police reports, the two suspects, approximately 16 years old, arrived at Nima Hospital around 1 am. One of the boys, with a bandaged toe, had visited the hospital the previous day for treatment. After receiving medical attention, the boys entered Dr. Akhtar's cabin.
Shortly after, nursing staff heard a gunshot. Rushing to the scene, they found Dr. Akhtar seated in his chair, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head.
Police suspect the killing was targeted, as there was no prior altercation. CCTV footage from the hospital's reception, dressing room, and gallery is currently being analyzed to identify the suspects.
This incident comes amidst growing concerns about the safety of medical professionals in India, especially following the recent murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata. Protests by doctors across the country are demanding improved security measures, including increased CCTV coverage and round-the-clock security personnel at healthcare facilities.
