Delhi Café Owner's Tragic Suicide: Family Blames Estranged Wife Amid Abuse Allegations

In a tragic turn of events, Puneet Khurana, co-owner of Delhi’s popular Woodbox Café, died by suicide on New Year’s Eve, prompting allegations and an outpouring of grief. Khurana, aged 40, was found hanging in his residence in Kalyan Vihar, Model Town.

The incident has ignited a controversy involving his estranged wife and business partner, Manika Pahwa, with whom he was undergoing a divorce.

Social Media Post Highlights "Toxicity and Abuse"

Days before Khurana’s death, Pahwa shared a cryptic post on Instagram, alluding to her experiences of "toxicity and narcissistic abuse." In the post, she expressed her journey of healing and being "free" from her past struggles. Without directly naming anyone, Pahwa referred to her alleged abusers as "insecure cowards" and emphasized the importance of virtues like kindness, love, and respect over material wealth.

She wrote, “Kindness, love, understanding, trust, wisdom, affection, and care hold more importance than money, property, and gold. God bless the unkind ones. I am free, and the beautiful ruins are part of me."

Family's Allegations Against Estranged Wife

Khurana's family has held Pahwa and her family responsible for his death, accusing them of mental harassment and instigation. His sister alleged that Pahwa, along with her parents and sister, pressured Khurana, repeatedly daring him to die by suicide.

"Manika and her family stressed him out and told him he couldn’t achieve anything. They even threatened to throw our parents out of the house and mocked him," she said, adding that Khurana had recorded a video before his death, detailing the alleged abuse.

The family claimed that business disputes further escalated tensions between the couple. According to them, a prior agreement had divided their ventures—Pahwa retained ownership of Woodbox Café, while Khurana managed For God’s Bakery. Despite the agreement, Pahwa allegedly continued to demand her share from the other business.

A Mother’s Pain

Khurana's mother also spoke out, stating that her son had suffered silently under the weight of continuous pressure. "He didn’t want to upset us, so he kept swallowing his grief. He was doing well, but the torture became unbearable," she said.

Legal Action Initiated

The couple, who married in 2016 and separated two years ago, had a history of discord that extended into their professional lives. Khurana's family has filed a police complaint, seeking action against Pahwa and her family. Authorities are investigating the claims and examining evidence, including Khurana’s alleged video statement.

Reflection and Awareness

This tragedy underscores the mental health challenges that can arise from strained relationships and unresolved disputes. It also highlights the importance of addressing emotional distress and fostering respectful communication in personal and professional partnerships.

As investigations continue, the case serves as a sobering reminder of the need for empathy, understanding, and support in navigating life’s challenges.
