Delhi 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case: Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar Gets Life Imprisonment

Delhi 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots: Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi on Tuesday pronounced lifetime imprisonment for former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, convicted of the murder of a father and son during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Sajjan Kumar argued in court that he does not deserve the death penalty highlighting his age, 80, and his exemplary conduct while serving time since 2018 for another related conviction.

According to the reports, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court held Sajjan Kumar for plotting and proving riots that resulted in brutal killings of 2 Sikhs in the Saraswati Vihar area on November 1, 1984.

Specifically, he was found guilty of leading an armed mob that not only murdered a father and his son but also set their home on fire, a heinous act that contributed to the widespread chaos and destruction during that period.

A special investigation team eventually took charge of the case initially registered by the Punjabi Bagh Police Station.

The violence was reportedly in retaliation for the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The prosecution has claimed that the mob was heavily armed with dangerous weapons during these events.

Sajjan Kumar is currently held in Tihar jail.
