Clean Yamuna Drive: Delhi Minister Says 1,300 Tonnes Of Garbage Removed In Last 10 Days
Delhi's Minister of Irrigation and Flood Control, Parvesh Verma, recently conducted a boat inspection of the Yamuna River. He revealed that 1,300 tonnes of waste have been cleared from the river over the past ten days. Cleaning the Yamuna was a significant pledge made by the BJP during the Delhi Assembly elections.
"In 2023, Delhi faced a flood. Previously, all the floodgates were closed, but now they have been repaired and raised to prevent future flooding," Mr Verma said.

Efforts to Clean Yamuna
The minister emphasised their commitment to fully clean and rejuvenate the Yamuna. The Delhi Development Authority is working on restoring the riverbed while removing encroachments. This initiative aims to ensure a cleaner and healthier river environment for Delhi's residents.
Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are planned for installation at 18 major drains that currently release pollutants into the Yamuna. "Complaints will be addressed, new STPs will be set up and the capacity of existing ones will be increased. All STPs are expected to be installed within two years," Mr Verma said.
Government Involvement
Pravesh Verma criticised previous administrations for neglecting the river's cleanliness over the last decade. He stated that no substantial efforts were made, not even in planning stages. "It never even occurred to the previous government to work for the Yamuna. But now, not only the Delhi government but the PMO itself is involved," Mr Verma added.
The minister's statements highlight a renewed focus on environmental issues in Delhi.
