BJP's Defection Strategy In Delhi Polls: With Several Turncoat Candidates In First List, Nadda Steps In

As the Delhi Assembly elections for 2025 draw near, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched its campaign efforts, with party president J.P. Nadda playing a pivotal role in steering the party's election management. On January 9, 2025, Nadda conducted a series of strategic meetings with party workers at the Delhi BJP office, where he underscored the importance of mobilizing support for the 70 candidates the party plans to field in the upcoming polls. These meetings, however, coincided with the release of BJP's first list of candidates, stirring both enthusiasm and concern within party ranks.

The BJP's election strategy aims to extend its reach beyond Delhi's central areas to connect with voters in the outskirts, particularly targeting the migrant voter base from the Purvanchal region. Nadda's remarks during the meeting emphasized the need to solidify this demographic's support. Despite this focus on Purvanchal voters, the first list did not feature a significant representation from the region, raising questions about the party's commitment to this voter segment. The BJP is, however, expected to roll out welfare schemes for women, similar to initiatives seen in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, although only two women candidates have been named in the initial list.

Nadda also addressed controversial comments made by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, who had criticized the increasing number of voters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in Delhi, referring to them as "fake voters." Nadda condemned this, accusing Kejriwal of insulting these communities, and vowed that the people of Delhi would give a strong reply to the AAP leader's remarks. He declared, '' Kejriwal, who has been looting Delhi for the last 10 years, started fearing defeat and made baseless statements against our brothers and sisters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The people of Delhi will definitely uproot him from power."

Among the 29 candidates listed in the BJP's first list, eight are turncoats-individuals who previously belonged to other parties and have now joined the BJP. This move has sparked mixed reactions within the party, particularly among members who feel that the inclusion of experienced but previously unsuccessful candidates, some of whom lost in the 2013 and 2020 elections, could lead to internal dissatisfaction. However, Nadda has urged party members to support the selected candidates and avoid any signs of rebellion, stressing that the BJP's long absence from power in Delhi makes the upcoming election crucial.

The first list of candidates was followed by remarks from BJP's Northeast Delhi MP, Manoj Tiwari, who highlighted the party's commitment to improving Delhi's infrastructure and services. Tiwari promised the release of the BJP's manifesto, or sankalp patra, which will pledge to provide better amenities, including clean water, job security, and improved air quality-services, he claims, have been neglected by the AAP government.

As the BJP prepares for the Delhi Assembly elections with a mix of experienced turncoats and fresh faces, its strategy is clear: it will focus on addressing governance issues, connect with migrant voters, and implement welfare schemes for women. With the second list of candidates expected soon, the BJP's campaign is set to intensify, aiming to break its 26-year streak without power in Delhi. The outcome of the 2025 elections will be pivotal in shaping the political future of the national capital and will likely be a critical battleground in the broader political landscape of India.
