BJP Replaces AAP’s Pink Ticket Scheme With Smart Card-Based Free Bus Travel For Delhi Women
Women in Delhi will soon need to provide proof of residency to access free bus rides, as the city government plans to replace the existing 'pink ticket' system with a digital smart card. The change, confirmed by officials on Thursday, marks a transition from the earlier model that allowed all women commuters to travel free of cost, regardless of their place of residence.
The new smart card will be issued to eligible Delhi residents and will offer lifetime validity for use on public buses across the city. Registration for the card is expected to begin in the coming weeks.

The update follows concerns regarding potential misuse under the current pink ticket arrangement. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who assumed office after the BJP's win in the February 5 Assembly elections, stated that the new system is designed to increase transparency and efficiency.
"We are committed to ensuring this benefit continues for women while improving accountability. Digital travel cards will help streamline the process," Gupta said.
Introduced in 2019 by the previous government, the pink ticket scheme provided paper-based tickets for individual rides, with operators reimbursed by the government. The upcoming smart card model will fully digitize the system, allowing seamless access to free bus services at any time for eligible women.
Gupta also highlighted plans to modernize Delhi's public transportation network, aiming for greater accessibility and global standards. The shift to a smart card system is expected to be rolled out within two to three weeks.
In support of the initiative and broader transport upgrades, the 2025-26 Delhi Budget has allocated ₹12,952 crore for public transport-an increase from ₹9,337 crore the previous year.
