Big Relief For Noida And Gurugram Commuters: How Delhi’s Third Ring Road Will Cut Traffic Woes

Relief is on the way for thousands of daily commuters between Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram. The long-anticipated Third Ring Road, officially named the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), is nearing completion and is expected to be operational by August 2025, with around 95% of the work already done. This major infrastructure upgrade is set to significantly ease traffic congestion and reduce travel times across the National Capital Region.

What is Delhi's Third Ring Road?

UER-II is a 74-km-long, six-lane express corridor developed under the Delhi Master Plan 2021. It begins at Alipur in North Delhi (NH-44) and runs all the way to Mahipalpur, near the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway (NH-48), passing through key areas like Bawana, Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, Dwarka, and Bakkarwala.

Big Relief For Noida and Gurugram Commuters How Delhi s Third Ring Road Will Cut Traffic Woes

Developed in five construction packages by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), the project was later designated as a national highway with a total estimated cost of ₹8,000 crore.

How Will It Help?

UER-II functions as a high-speed, modern bypass that is designed to take pressure off Delhi's already burdened Inner Ring Road and Outer Ring Road. It is expected to cut travel times to major hubs like IGI Airport by up to 60%, offering signal-free movement from outer Delhi areas into the city.

It also connects seamlessly with major national expressways such as the Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Jaipur, Delhi-Dehradun, and the Dwarka Expressway. This strategic integration diverts long-distance and freight traffic away from central Delhi, helping reduce congestion, emissions, and fuel use during peak hours.

In addition, the corridor links the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways, improving access to nearby regions like Noida and Faridabad. Localities such as Bawana, Rohini, Mundka, Najafgarh, and Narela will gain direct, signal-free routes to other parts of Delhi and the airport, bypassing traditional choke points.

The improved connectivity will particularly benefit daily commuters and logistics movement across Dwarka, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Industrial areas like Mundka, Bawana Industrial Area, and Tikri Kalan, which currently see heavy worker and freight activity, will gain faster links to highways, the airport, and major hubs.

What's Planned Next - Eastern Arm Extension

A major extension is already in the works. The eastern arm of UER-II will enhance Delhi's connectivity with Ghaziabad and Noida, offering a bypass for traffic from southeast and eastern parts of the city.

As per reports:

Phase 1 of the extension is a 17-km link from Alipur/UER-II through Tronica City to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, costing ₹3,350 crore.

Phase 2, approximately 65 km long, stretches from Mandaula to Noida, passing through Ghaziabad, Farukhnagar, Ghitora, Hidan, and Indirapuram, with an estimated budget of ₹7,500 crore.

Together, the 82-km eastern extension, worth ₹10,850 crore, will allow vehicles to bypass congested routes such as Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, Kalindi Kunj, and Sarai Kale Khan. It will also ease pressure on the Delhi-Meerut and Delhi-Dehradun highways, while enhancing regional access for Loni, Baghpat, and nearby UP and Haryana towns.

With both UER-II and its planned extensions, Delhi is poised to get a transformative boost in infrastructure, ensuring smoother, greener, and faster mobility across the NCR.
