Bhai Dooj 2023: Know Shubh Muhurat, Puja Vidhi And Other Details

Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhai Tika, Bhaubeej, Bhai Phonta, or Bhratri Dwitiya, is a festival that commemorates the special bond shared between siblings. Serving as the conclusion of the five-day Diwali festivities in several states, Bhai Dooj is observed annually two days after the Festival of Lights. This year, the celebration spans across November 14 and 15.

On this significant day, sisters apply a tilak on their brothers' foreheads, extending prayers for their enduring happiness and well-being. Carrying a vibrant thali adorned with sweets, roli, and coconut, sisters perform the ritual. During the tilak application, it is customary for the brother to face north or northwest, while the sister faces northeast or east. Following this, the siblings share traditional Indian sweets and engage in the joyous exchange of gifts. Both brothers and sisters observe a fast until the completion of the pooja.

In instances where the brother cannot be physically present, the sister has the option to send the tilak and dry coconut to her brother. In regions like Maharashtra and Haryana, women without brothers partake in the customary worship of Moon Chandra on the auspicious occasion of Bhau-beej.

Distinguishing Bhai Dooj from Raksha Bandhan, on this day, sisters do not tie a thread or Rakhi on their brothers' wrists, as is the tradition during Raksha Bandhan.
