Arvind Kejriwal's Security Withdrawn? Delhi Police Busts AAP, Punjab Police's 'False' Claim

The Punjab Police recently claimed they were compelled to reduce the security detail for AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. They stated that the Delhi Police and the Election Commission of India instructed them to do so before the Delhi state assembly elections on 5th February.

Despite these claims, the Delhi Police clarified that Kejriwal's security was not reduced. An officer mentioned, "We've just taken over the charge. He already has been provided with Z+ security with 63 personnel by Delhi officials."

Security Concerns and Political Reactions

Punjab Police alleged frequent threats to both Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Kejriwal. They shared these concerns with relevant agencies but had to withdraw part of Kejriwal's security. This decision led to political tensions, with AAP accusing deliberate withdrawal and BJP defending it as an administrative move.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav from Punjab Police stated, "Occasionally, we get reports of threats to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal and share them with the concerned agencies. Today, after the Delhi Police's intervention following the directions of the Election Commission, we have withdrawn Punjab security from Arvind Kejriwal's security cover. We will continue to share inputs with Delhi Police."
Delhi Police's Stand on Security Protocols

The Delhi Police explained their stance, asserting that one individual cannot have dual special securities by law. They emphasized their capability in safeguarding both Kejriwal and election processes without needing additional state protection.

A Delhi Police officer remarked, "He (Kejriwal) continues to be a Z+ protectee of Delhi Police." Another officer added, "It is a rule that if anyone has a special category of security from any specific state police, the state police giving the security cover has to inform the other state's police that the person has a threat perception."

The DGP further noted that both Mann and Kejriwal had Z+ protection from Punjab. However, due to concerns raised by Delhi authorities, a portion of this security was removed. The Punjab Police accused Delhi counterparts of 'forcing' this withdrawal.

Z+ Security Explained

"Z+ security" is India's second-highest level of protection after SPG for the Prime Minister. It involves around 55 personnel including NSG commandos, advanced vehicles, and close surveillance for individuals facing significant threats.

Delhi officers reiterated their position: "We have not withdrawn Kejriwal's security cover. We've just taken over his security from Punjab police. It is by law." They questioned why Punjab personnel should provide protection when they are more competent.

This situation highlights ongoing debates about political influence over security decisions during election periods in India.
