Arvind Kejriwal Writes To Amit Shah, Calls Delhi ‘Crime Capital’ Amid Rising Law And Order Concerns

Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting a meeting to address concerns regarding the law and order situation in Delhi.

Kejriwal raised alarm over the deteriorating security situation, stressing that although law and order in Delhi fall under the central government's jurisdiction, the city is increasingly being labelled the "crime capital" both domestically and internationally.

He referenced troubling statistics, stating that Delhi ranks highest in crimes against women and murder cases among 19 major metropolitan cities in India.

Kejriwal further highlighted the emergence of extortion gangs, bomb threats to schools and airports, and a staggering "350 per cent" rise in drug-related crimes, all of which have heightened fears among residents.

In his letter to Amit Shah, Kejriwal wrote, "Delhi's law and order is under the Central Government, but Delhi is now being known as the capital of crime."

He added, "Delhi ranks number one in crimes against women among 19 metro cities of India, Delhi ranks number one in murder cases, and extortion gangs are active across the city."

"Airports and schools are receiving bomb threats, and drug-related crimes have increased by 350 per cent, worrying people across the city for their security," Kejriwal stated.

He went on to say that Delhi's reputation as the crime capital is spreading both nationally and internationally.

Kejriwal's Criticism of BJP

Earlier this week, Kejriwal took aim at Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of failing to manage the capital's law and order.

"Amit Shah ji has ruined Delhi. He has turned Delhi into a jungle raj. People are living a life of terror everywhere. BJP is no longer able to handle the law and order situation in Delhi. The people of Delhi will have to unite and raise their voices," Kejriwal posted on X (formerly Twitter).

He also claimed that criminals in Delhi no longer fear the authorities, stating, *"Another morning with heartbreaking news. Bullets are being fired openly. Delhi's criminals no longer have any fear of law and order."*

The AAP's official X account added to the criticism with a post featuring a picture of Amit Shah, stating, *"Seeing Delhi bleeding, Mogambo is happy."*

AAP's Ongoing Campaign in Parliament

AAP MPs have repeatedly issued suspension of business notices in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to discuss the rising crime rates and threats to public representatives, underscoring their concerns about Delhi's security.

Earlier this week, following bomb threats to several schools in Delhi, Kejriwal criticised Amit Shah and questioned the measures being taken to ensure the safety of residents. He demanded to know if any arrests had been made in connection with the incidents.

Highlighting the government's responsibility to maintain security in the national capital, Kejriwal said the issue required urgent action.

On 19 November, the Delhi High Court instructed the Delhi Government and Delhi Police to devise a comprehensive action plan, including a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), to handle bomb threats and related emergencies. The court has set a deadline of eight weeks for the completion of the plan.
