Anti-Incumbency Fails To Halt AAP’s Bid as 13 Veterans Prepare for Fourth Delhi Election
In anticipation of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has chosen to re-nominate a select group of its key leaders, despite the perceived anti-incumbency after three terms in power. Among those making the list for the fourth consecutive time are prominent figures such as AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla, and Babarpur MLA Gopal Rai. This decision comes amidst the party's strategy to refresh around 30% of its sitting MLAs to counteract potential voter fatigue.

The party's approach to candidate selection has been comprehensive, involving a feedback survey initiated in September following Kejriwal's arrest in connection with the alleged excise policy scam. This survey aimed to evaluate the popularity of leaders, the impact of their work in their constituencies, and their overall winnability. It was complemented by door-to-door canvassing and booth-level feedback, ensuring a robust understanding of the electorate's preferences and the leaders' standings.
Retained Candidates and Strategic Changes
While stalwarts like Sisodia and Birla have seen changes in their contesting seats, with Sisodia moving from Patparganj to Jangpura and Birla from Mangolpuri to Madipur, others have been retained in their current constituencies. Notably, Gopal Rai expressed gratitude for the party's continued faith in him, highlighting the developmental needs and achievements in his densely populated North East Delhi constituency. Other veterans recontesting include Saurabh Bhardwaj, Somnath Bharti, Imran Hussain, and Sanjeev Jha, who had secured a resounding victory in the 2020 polls with the highest margin of over 88,000 votes.
The AAP's meticulous candidate selection process also took into account factors beyond public sentiment, such as the candidates' social media presence, their rapport with party volunteers and senior leaders, and their visibility at events and protests, notably in the aftermath of Kejriwal's arrest. This holistic approach underscores the party's strategic efforts to balance experience with fresh energy, aiming to mitigate the challenges of anti-incumbency while capitalizing on proven leadership and grassroots connections.
Electoral Strategy Amidst Competition
As the AAP solidifies its slate for all 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, its rivals are still in the process of finalizing their candidates. The Congress has named 21 contenders, while the BJP has yet to announce its lineup for the elections slated for early next year. This staggered declaration of candidates by the opposition parties suggests a strategic timing on their part or possibly indicates the challenges they face in matching the AAP's preparedness and popularity among Delhi's electorate.
