Worli Water Tank Security Lapses: Drunkards And Trespassers Roam Freely, Residents Fear Contamination

The security of the water tank area in Worli, which plays a crucial role in supplying water to residents, is in a precarious state, according to a Lokmat report. Despite its importance, the area is frequented by drunkards, vagrants, and couples even during the day. Security arrangements are inadequate, and guards assigned to the site are often absent, raising serious concerns among locals.

Insufficient Security Measures

Worli Water Tank Security Lapses

Two large water tanks are located on a hill along B.G. Kher Road in Worli. These tanks are essential for the health and safety of Mumbaikars. However, their security is compromised. Official records indicate that three security guards are assigned to this area, but only two are present on duty. One of them is stationed at the main gate, which is 400 metres away from the tanks, and does not actively restrict access. Employees also state that the second security guard is frequently absent from his assigned location. Residents believe that two guards are insufficient to secure such a large area effectively, as per the same report.

Unauthorised Activities Raise Alarm

Youths and locals from nearby slums are often seen drinking alcohol near the water tanks, even in the afternoon. Groups of people involved in gambling and drug use are also frequently present. This situation has raised concerns about the potential for contamination or damage to the water supply.

Calls For A Protective Wall

Local authorities and residents have been pushing for the construction of a protective wall to restrict unauthorised access. However, political interference has delayed the project, as some slum dwellings need to be relocated to make way for the wall.

There are also demands for CCTV surveillance to monitor the area. However, residents worry that even if cameras are installed, they could be damaged. A municipal official from the Worli Reservoir stated that there have been instances where individuals involved in illegal activities have assaulted employees attempting to enforce security measures.

Risk To Public Health And Safety

Children from neighbouring slums have turned parts of the area into a cricket pitch, causing damage to infrastructure. Residents from Achan Nagar, an adjacent slum, frequently enter the premises to collect firewood. The tank's valves are exposed, and some covers are not securely in place. Experts warn that the lack of security could lead to potential contamination of the water supply, posing a severe risk to the lives of Mumbaikars.

Urgent Need For Action

Given the critical nature of these concerns, residents are urging the municipal administration to take swift action. Strengthening security measures, installing a protective wall, and ensuring the presence of guards at all times are essential steps to safeguard the water supply and maintain public health.
