Viral Video: Mumbai Train Staffer Dumps Trash On Tracks; Netizens Say, "Tech May Improve But Habits Don't"
A staff member of the On-Board Housekeeping Services (OBHS) was caught on camera throwing waste food onto the railway tracks instead of using the dustbin inside the train. The incident, recorded by a passenger, sparked widespread discussion on social media, with users criticising the improper disposal of trash.
The video, shared on X, formerly known as Twitter by a user named 'KantInEat', reportedly shows the incident occurring on train number 04115, which was travelling from Subedarganj near Prayagraj to Mumbai. In the footage, the staffer can be seen opening the train door and discarding food plates and leftover meals directly onto the tracks. Even when questioned by a fellow passenger, he justified his actions by claiming that the dustbin inside the coach would overflow if not emptied.

Following public outrage, the Railways responded to the viral video and confirmed that necessary action had been taken against the staff member. Railway Seva, the official support handle for rail users, stated that a heavy penalty was imposed on the employee. Additionally, he was removed from duty and given counselling to ensure better cleanliness practices.
"There is a well-established mechanism for garbage disposal in Indian Railways. The OBHS staff member who violated the rules has been removed, and a heavy penalty has been imposed. Further, staff are being counselled to maintain proper cleanliness in trains and railway premises," Railway Seva posted on X.
Social media users expressed their anger over the incident, with many demanding strict action. "This is exactly how filth spreads. Shocking to see railway staff doing this," wrote one user. Another commented, "The authorities must take this seriously. Such behaviour should not be tolerated."
However, some users pointed out that the issue also lies with the limited waste management facilities on trains. "Yes, he is wrong, but can we also talk about the amount of waste generated? And why is the dustbin so small?" one person questioned.
While the Railways has mechanisms in place for waste disposal, this incident has raised concerns about the enforcement of cleanliness guidelines among staff.
