Maharashtra's New Initiative: Toll-Free Travel For Electric Vehicles On Atal Setu

Electric vehicles (EVs) in Maharashtra now enjoy toll-free travel on the Atal Setu. This initiative, effective from Friday, aligns with the state's sustainable transport goals. Both private and government electric four-wheelers benefit from this exemption, which was announced in April under the Maharashtra Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy. Plans are underway to extend these exemptions to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Samruddhi Expressway.

The toll relief for EVs is part of Maharashtra's broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner transportation options. The policy also offers various incentives for electric mobility, including toll discounts on major highways. While electric four-wheelers and buses can travel toll-free on routes like the Atal Setu, other state and national highways managed by the Public Works Department provide a 50% discount for electric four-wheelers.

Key Benefits of Toll Exemption

Eligible vehicles for this toll relief include private electric cars, passenger four-wheelers, state transport buses, and urban public transport electric vehicles. However, electric goods carriers do not qualify for these waivers. Officials believe that this policy will encourage more people to adopt EVs and reduce dependence on fuel-based transportation.

Mumbai currently boasts a growing fleet of electric vehicles. The city has registered 18,400 light four-wheelers, 2,500 light passenger vehicles, 1,200 heavy passenger vehicles, and 300 medium passenger vehicles. This totals 22,400 registered EVs in the region.

Impact on Daily Traffic

The Atal Setu sees daily traffic of around 60,000 vehicles. Of these, between 34,000 and 40,000 specifically use the Atal Setu itself. Additionally, there are 22,000 vehicles on the Samruddhi Expressway and thousands more on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

In a move to further promote EV ownership, the government has decided to waive tolls for all EVs on certain routes as an Independence Day gift. This decision aims to ease financial burdens on EV owners amid rising fuel prices and environmental concerns.
