Speeding BMW Hits Ganpati Workers In Mumbai: One Dead, Another Critical

In a heartbreaking accident early Saturday morning, two workers of the famous Mulund Cha Raja Ganpati Mandal were struck by a speeding BMW in Mumbai's Mulund area, resulting in one fatality and leaving another critically injured.

The incident occurred around 4 am near Aakruti Tower in Gavanpada as the workers were putting up banners for the upcoming Ganpati festival, according to reports from news agency ANI.

Speeding BMW Hits Ganpati Workers In Mumbai

The two workers, Pritam Thorat and Prasad Patil were actively preparing for the Ganpati festival when a BMW, driven at high speed, rammed into them. Thorat succumbed to his injuries shortly after being rushed to the hospital, while Patil remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment. The BMW driver fled the scene immediately after the crash.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The Mumbai Police quickly launched an investigation into the hit-and-run case. Using surveillance footage and witness accounts, they traced the BMW to a location in Navi Mumbai. The driver, identified as 35-year-old Shakti Alagh, a resident of Mulund (West), was arrested later in the day.

Alagh initially fled to his building in Mulund after the crash, where he parked the BMW and then took a bike to escape to Navi Mumbai. He was apprehended in Kharghar after police tracked his movements. According to authorities, Alagh was not intoxicated at the time of the accident, but his blood samples have been sent for medical testing to confirm this. Police sources also revealed that Alagh had been working in a call centre and had bought the BMW second-hand.

A senior inspector told The Indian Express that Alagh claimed he had been helping with Ganpati preparations at a local Mandal until late Friday night. He later decided to take his newly serviced BMW for a test drive after struggling to fall asleep. It was during this drive that the tragic incident occurred. Alagh, fearing being attacked by bystanders, abandoned his car and fled.

The police are expected to produce the accused in court on Sunday, where they will seek his custody for further investigation into the matter. The charge sheet will include reckless driving and fleeing the scene of a fatal accident.

The Victims

The two victims, both active members of the Mulund Cha Raja Ganpati Mandal, were deeply involved in the preparations for the Ganpati festival. Thorat, who tragically lost his life in the accident, was a well-known figure in the mandal, while Patil, who remains in critical condition, is battling for his life at a local hospital.

The incident has shocked the Mulund community, where the Ganpati Mandal plays a significant role in local festivities. The Ganpati festival is one of Mumbai's biggest annual events, with thousands of volunteers involved in its preparations.

Reckless Driving in Mumbai

This incident is the latest in a series of reckless driving accidents involving luxury cars in Mumbai. Just last month, a similar hit-and-run incident occurred in Worli involving another BMW, which resulted in the death of a biker. These cases highlight growing concerns about speeding and negligent driving in the city.

The authorities have reiterated their warnings against reckless driving and have vowed to crack down on offenders, particularly in the run-up to the festival season when road safety is a major concern.

Community Response

The Mulund Cha Raja Ganpati Mandal and the local community are mourning the loss of one of their own. Members of the mandal have expressed deep sorrow over Thorat's death and have extended support to Patil's family during this difficult time. Many have also called for stricter traffic enforcement, particularly during festival preparations when volunteers are working late hours on busy streets.

The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by speeding vehicles and the importance of adhering to traffic laws, particularly in crowded city areas like Mumbai.
