Shiv Sena’s Prominent Face: Sanjay Shirsat – From Rickshaw Driver to 3-Time MLA, Transforming Sambhajinagar
Sanjay Shirsat, a dedicated Shiv Sainik, epitomises the party's ethos of empowering hardworking, common youth.
Like Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Shirsat's journey began as a rickshaw driver. Balasaheb Thackeray's Shiv Sena grew on the sweat and effort of such dedicated individuals, who, through sheer determination, represented the party across local bodies, often facing tough battles against established political forces.

Shirsat is one such leader who rose from humble beginnings, becoming a formidable political figure in Sambhajinagar.
In the aftermath of the Marathwada University renaming movement, Balasaheb expanded Shiv Sena's influence into Marathwada, capitalising on the discontent of disenfranchised youth.
Thackeray's dynamic speeches and efforts by key Shiv Sena leaders like Diwakar Raote and Gajanan Kirtikar created a political churn in the region, bringing young leaders like Shirsat into the limelight.
Shirsat, deeply influenced by Thackeray, transitioned from being a rickshaw driver to actively engaging in social work, eventually securing a leadership role in Sambhajinagar's Shiv Sena unit.
Shirsat first entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 2009, defeating the Congress candidate from the Aurangabad West constituency. He went on to win the seat again in 2014 and 2019, making him a three-term MLA, a rare feat among Shiv Sainiks.
In 2022, when Eknath Shinde gained the support of 40 MLAs and became Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Shirsat was one of Shinde's earliest backers.
Although he wasn't given a ministerial position, Shirsat remained steadfast, handling his responsibilities as the party spokesperson with grace and composure.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shirsat's outreach efforts, providing essential supplies and immunity-boosting medicines, further bolstered his popularity.
Over the past five years, he has spearheaded numerous development projects in his constituency, including securing Rs 100 crore for the Beed bypass road project and upgrading roads in Devlai.
His efforts to modernise infrastructure, such as widening a dangerous single-lane bypass into a safer four-lane road, have significantly improved the area's safety and connectivity.
With his organisational strength and focus on development, Shirsat stands firm in the Sambhajinagar West constituency, which has a 70% Hindu voter base.
Political experts believe that the development work, combined with Eknath Shinde's charisma and the popularity of welfare schemes like the Ladki Bahin Yojana among female voters, gives Shirsat a strong chance of success against the Uddhav Thackeray faction's candidate, Raju Shinde.
