Shinde Govt's Boost For Agriculture: Aid and Water Access For Maharashtra Farmers

Farmers are often hailed as the backbone of India's economy, with around 70% of the population directly or indirectly reliant on agriculture for employment. This sector, encompassing the production, processing, and marketing of essential goods like food grains, vegetables, and fruits, offers significant employment opportunities. Yet, despite its vast contribution, the sector has received limited attention for empowerment initiatives. Maharashtra's state government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the center, has recently been focusing efforts on uplifting and empowering farmers across the state.

Namo Shetkari Mahasanman Nidhi Yojana (NSMNY): Financial Support for Farmers

Shinde Govt s Boost For Agriculture

Prime Minister Modi's "PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi" scheme, which provides ₹500 monthly to farmers, has recently been supplemented by a similar initiative from the Maharashtra government. Under this dual scheme, farmers are now receiving a combined annual support of ₹12,000, benefiting nearly 9.2 million farmers in the state. This system ensures a fixed income for farmers, deposited directly into their bank accounts every two months.

Addressing Power Supply Challenges

Agriculture in Maharashtra relies heavily on adequate water and power supplies, especially for major crops like onions, sugarcane, rice, fruits, and vegetables. Erratic weather, including inconsistent monsoons and extreme conditions, has troubled farmers, particularly with unstable electricity supplies. However, under the leadership of Eknath Shinde, Maharashtra's state government has made notable strides in stabilizing power availability for agricultural use. This includes initiatives to curb prolonged power outages, enabling farmers to irrigate their crops reliably and prevent yield losses.

In a recent state budget announcement, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar declared a new scheme offering free agricultural electricity to farmers, benefiting 2.4 million agricultural households. This initiative, which will cost the state ₹14,761 crores, is expected to ease financial burdens and streamline farming operations. Additionally, the state has increased the subsidy for milk producers from ₹5 to ₹7 per liter, with a dedicated allocation of ₹965 crores. These measures support farmers who supply milk to cooperative and private dairies, boosting their income.

Compensation Scheme for Onion and Soybean Farmers

Maharashtra's prominent onion and soybean sectors have faced market volatility, with recent price drops impacting farmers' livelihoods. To counter this, the Shinde government has introduced a compensation scheme offering ₹5,000 per hectare for these crop producers, compensating for losses due to international market fluctuations. The initiative has already disbursed payments directly to farmers' accounts, with support from Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.

Solar Power Initiatives and River Linking Projects

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has signed an agreement with energy companies to invest in solar power within Maharashtra, laying the foundation for free daytime electricity for farmers. Further, the state is prioritizing river-link projects to address water scarcity in the drought-prone areas of Marathwada, Western Vidarbha, and Northern Maharashtra. Approved projects like the Nalaganga-Wainganga river link and the Narpaar river link aim to increase water availability, benefiting millions of farmers across these regions.
