Sanjay Raut Hints At Shiv Sena (UBT) Contesting BMC Elections Solo

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut suggests the party may contest the BMC elections independently, highlighting internal dynamics and aspirations within the party. The decision reflects confidence in maintaining influence in Mumbai's political landscape.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut recently hinted at the possibility of the party contesting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections independently. Speaking to reporters, Raut mentioned that party members are urging for a solo run in the local body elections due to a higher number of aspirants compared to Lok Sabha or state assembly polls.

The Shiv Sena has had a stronghold over the BMC for 25 years, from 1997 until 2022. The term for the previous elected representatives ended in March 2022, and new elections have been pending for nearly three years. Discussions are ongoing between Uddhav Thackeray and other leaders about whether to proceed alone in these elections.

Shiv Sena's Historical Influence

Raut emphasised Shiv Sena's significant influence in Mumbai, stating that if they had contested more seats during the assembly polls, they would have secured victories. He stressed the importance of winning Mumbai to prevent its separation from Maharashtra. In past elections, Shiv Sena contested 24 seats in Mumbai, winning 10.

In contrast, Congress fielded candidates for 10 seats and won four, while NCP (SP) contested two seats but did not win any. Despite being in alliance with BJP previously, Shiv Sena has often contested BMC and other civic body polls independently. Raut highlighted efforts to continue this approach.

MVA's Role in Other Regions

While considering going solo in Mumbai, Raut confirmed that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition will remain intact in other regions like Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Nashik civic bodies. This indicates a strategic approach where alliances may vary based on regional dynamics and electoral prospects.

The decision to potentially contest alone reflects internal party dynamics and aspirations within Shiv Sena. It also underscores their confidence in maintaining influence over Mumbai's political landscape despite challenges faced by MVA.
