Register Your Property With Ease: Stamps And Registration Department Extends Working Hours

The Stamps and Registration Department has announced an extension of working hours at all its offices by two hours from March 1 to 31, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. This change aims to manage the increased number of document registrations typically seen during the financial year-end.

As per the same report, Udayraj Chavan, the Deputy Inspector General of Registration, has urged all officers and staff to ensure smooth operations during this busy period and to inform relevant stakeholders about the extended hours.

Mitesh Thakkar, a specialist in stamps and registrations, stated, "The ready reckoner rates will rise by April 1, so many people want to complete their transactions before that date. The registration department has a target of Rs 55,000 crore and is keen to achieve it. This decision will benefit the public."

According to sources in the state finance department, finances are currently under pressure due to the Ladki Bahin scheme, and the state government is looking to increase revenue before the end of March.

Dominic Romell, president of the Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry (CREDAI-MCHI), welcomed the decision, saying, "This is a positive move as it will make property registration easier for people and help the government raise more revenue."

Additionally, the state revenue department plans to implement the One State One Registration initiative. This will allow citizens to register their properties anywhere in the state.

A senior officer explained that interlinking the entire system would enable individuals to register properties without needing to travel. "We have already implemented this in Pune and will soon do the same in Mumbai. We presented this to the Chief Minister, and it has been included in his 100-day plan."

This initiative will allow someone from Mumbai to register a property in Alibag or Pune without having to make a physical trip. The sub-registrar will ensure that all documentation is in order. A key bureaucrat noted that this approach will save both time and money. Currently, Mumbai accounts for 50 per cent of the registrations in the state, with many buyers in Pune, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts spending an entire day for registration. Enhancing this system can significantly reduce that time, allowing transactions to be completed in just a few hours.
