Mumbai rain news: Heavy rain brought Mumbai, India's financial capital, to a standstill on Monday, and the downpour shows no signs of letting up. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for Mumbai on Tuesday, July 9.
Consequently, schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and the rural areas of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg will remain closed. This applies to primary and secondary schools, as well as junior and senior colleges.

Continued Rain and Disruption
Mumbai residents faced another dreary Tuesday morning, with relentless rain continuing to wreak havoc. The ceaseless downpour has disrupted suburban train services and flight operations, leaving streets waterlogged and traffic chaotic. Tragically, an elderly woman died due to burn injuries from a short circuit caused by the rain, as reported by Hindustan Times.
In some areas, Mumbai received more than 300 mm of rainfall in just six hours, leading to severe flooding in roads and low-lying areas.
Red Alert for Mumbai
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai on Tuesday. BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagarani urged citizens to remain cautious and stay indoors unless necessary. The BMC has mobilized all disaster management teams and assured citizens they can contact the BMC's disaster management cell on 1916 for assistance, as reported by Hindustan Times. The IMD predicts heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mumbai until July 12 and moderate to heavy rainfall in surrounding regions.
School and College Closures
The Thane Zilla Parishad, which oversees rural areas, declared a holiday on Tuesday. Schools and colleges in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts will also remain closed due to the 'red alert.' The BMC announced that all civic, government, and private schools and colleges would be closed as a precautionary measure, as per media reports. Mumbai University has postponed all exams scheduled for Tuesday, with new dates to be announced soon.
Travel Advisory
The Mumbai division of Central Railways advised passengers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary due to the forecast for heavy rains. Despite installing high-capacity pumps, Central Railway services faced significant disruptions due to waterlogging, stranding many local and out-station trains. Harbour line services were suspended again on Monday night due to waterlogged tracks, as per media reports.
Flight services at Mumbai airport were severely impacted by low visibility, leading to over 50 flight cancellations and runway operations being shut down for over an hour. The cancellations included 42 IndiGo flights and six Air India flights, as per media report. During the evening rush hour, BEST buses were diverted to alternate routes due to waterlogging in areas like Parel, Gandhi Market, Sangam Nagar, and Malad subway.
