Reay Road Bridge Ready For Traffic: Mumbai's First Cable-Stayed Overpass Completed

Mumbai's first cable-stayed road overbridge, located at Reay Road station, has been completed, according to a Midday report. The bridge, which features six lanes and a dedicated pedestrian footpath, has become one of the fastest-constructed overbridges spanning the rail lines.

Construction work for the bridge began on February 14, 2022, and in just two years, it has been finished. The new bridge is part of a larger citywide project aimed at upgrading old bridges in Mumbai. These century-old British-era bridges are being rebuilt as their lifespan has nearly ended.

An official from the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), also known as Maharail, explained the project's purpose in the report: "The plan is to replace old bridges with cable-stayed structures. This is being done in such a way that new bridges are built adjacent to the old ones, allowing traffic to continue smoothly while the old bridges are demolished." He added, "Once completed, these cable-stayed bridges will become an iconic feature of Mumbai's skyline."

In addition to the Reay Road bridge, construction is underway at Byculla, Dadar, and Ghatkopar, with the Reay Road bridge set to be commissioned shortly. The new bridge will allow traffic to flow through the Barrister Nath Pai Road underpass and will also ensure the required vertical clearance for vehicles passing under the eastern freeway, in line with Indian Road Congress standards. The bridge will feature architectural LED lighting to enhance its aesthetic appeal and include a bridge health monitoring system for improved safety.
