Pune Weather Alert: Heavy Rains Flood Pimpri-Chinchwad, Vehicles Swept Away
Torrential rainfall on Friday evening severely disrupted daily life across Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding areas, leading to widespread waterlogging and incidents of tree falls. According to officials, the downpour overwhelmed the city's drainage systems, and several vehicles were swept away in overflowing streams.
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) reported six instances of tree collapse across Bhosari, Talawade, Chikhali, and Charholi. In Charholi Gaon near DY Patil Road, five four-wheelers and three two-wheelers were carried away by floodwaters, fire brigade officials confirmed.

Chief Fire Officer Rushikant Chipade stated, "Residents managed to rescue five to six individuals trapped in their vehicles. In response to the emergency, police set up barricades at the affected location around 11 pm, and the road has been closed to traffic since."
Experts and civic officials blamed the flooding on poor coordination between departments and unplanned development. Civic planner Shrikant Gabale explained, "Many natural streams have either been covered or narrowed due to unchecked construction. It is critical to regularly map and monitor stormwater and drainage pipelines. Dumping of waste in natural streams and pipelines must be strictly curbed."
Omprakash Bhaiwal, head of PCMC's disaster management cell, acknowledged that while pre-monsoon drain cleaning had been conducted, heavy industrial waste - including thermocol, plastic, and packaging materials - ended up choking the stormwater lines during the rains. He said the problem was worsened by encroachments along natural waterways.
Bhaiwal also mentioned that 14 flood-prone areas have been identified, including Wakad, Bhosari, Pimpri, Ravet, Nashik Phata, and Sangvi. "During heavy rainfall, our teams will be deployed at these vulnerable spots to monitor and manage the situation," he added.
