Navi Mumbai International Airport Set To Launch First Flight In December 2025 With Sustainable Technologies

The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is set to launch its first flight in December 2025, as confirmed by CIDCO MD and Vice Chairman Vijay Singhal. During a media briefing, he announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would inaugurate the airport on October 8. The inauguration will include a landing at 2:40 pm, followed by a tour and public address.

Spanning 1,160 hectares, NMIA is poised to be India's largest and greenest airport project. The total cost is expected to reach Rs 1 lakh crore upon completion, with phase one costing around Rs 19,647 crore. "This airport will be an aviation hub in the world with double the capacity of that of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Airport and together both airports will handle 150 MPPA," said Singhal.

Passenger Capacity and Terminal Development

The airport will feature four terminals, with the first ready for inauguration. This terminal can accommodate 20 million passengers annually (MPPA). By 2035, all terminals are expected to be operational, collectively handling up to 90 MPPA. The second terminal should be ready by 2029 with a capacity of 30 MPPA, while the third and fourth terminals are slated for completion by 2032 and 2035 respectively, each managing 20 MPPA.

In terms of cargo capacity, NMIA aims to handle a total of 3.2 million metric tons (MMT). Initially, the first phase will manage about 0.8 MMT. The airport's design includes two runways each measuring 3.7 km in length. These runways are connected by dual parallel taxiways and rapid exit taxiways.

Innovative Connectivity Solutions

NMIA will boast multimodal connectivity through road, metro, rail, and water transport. Key projects like Atal Setu and Ulwe Coastal Road will ensure seamless road access. Metro Line 8 and extensions of Navi Mumbai Metro will link directly to Mumbai and CSMIA by 2031. Suburban rail access via Targhar and Khandeshwar stations is also planned.

The proposed Mumbai–Hyderabad High-Speed Rail Corridor will pass near the airport's eastern edge with an underground station for rapid regional access. Additionally, Targhar creek is set for water taxi development connecting to Radio Club jetty at Gateway.

Green Initiatives and Technological Advancements

As part of its commitment to sustainability, NMIA plans to use sustainable fuel with dedicated storage facilities. The airport will generate solar power up to 47 MW and operate entirely on electric buses. It will also feature digital art installations showcasing Maharashtra's cultural heritage alongside advanced technologies for seamless retail experiences.

The facility will initially operate with various aircraft stands including contact aircraft stands, remote commercial stands, cargo stands, general aviation stands supported by GA hangars along with parking for cars buses trucks etc., ensuring comprehensive passenger services from day one.

Advanced Passenger Experience

An app developed by Adani Group aims to streamline baggage tracking using AI-based queue management systems for efficient operations. Parking spaces can be pre-booked through this app as well. Once fully completed NMIA plans parking facilities accommodating numerous aircraft types including contact stand remote stand general aviation aircraft cargos etc., enhancing overall passenger experience significantly.
