Navi Mumbai Building Collapse: Three Dead, Two Injured As Illegal Structure Crumbles
Three individuals lost their lives, and two others were injured following the collapse of an unauthorised building in Shahbaz village, CBD-Bapur, early on Saturday. The structure began to show signs of distress around 3 am, prompting residents to evacuate. An hour later, at 4 am, the building completely collapsed.
The victims included two employees from a shipping company and one person who aspired to join a marine group. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation had partially demolished the building in 2010 but did not take further action. Activists have criticised the civic body for its inaction despite no court stay on demolition.

Rescue Operations And Response
A National Disaster Response Force unit was redirected from Thane to assist with rescue efforts. It took the team 12 hours to rescue those trapped under the debris. A total of 55 residents, including 16 minors, managed to escape before the collapse.
The injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Municipal commissioner Kailas Shinde stated that they are receiving free medical care at a government hospital. Additionally, a report is being sent to the Thane district administration for compensation to the victims' families.
Building Details And Previous Actions
The illegal building had four rooms on each floor and three shops on the ground floor. Despite previous partial demolition by authorities in 2010, no further measures were taken against it. This has led activists to accuse the civic body of negligence.
The collapse has highlighted significant issues regarding unauthorised constructions and the need for stringent enforcement of building regulations. The incident underscores the importance of timely action by municipal authorities to prevent such tragedies.
The victims were all staying in the same room when the collapse occurred. The prompt evacuation by residents likely prevented more casualties. However, this tragic event raises questions about safety standards and regulatory oversight in construction practices.
As investigations continue, there is a pressing need for accountability and stricter measures to ensure such incidents do not recur. The focus now shifts towards providing support to those affected and addressing systemic failures that allowed this illegal structure to exist.
