Navi Mumbai Airport Update: IndiGo To Operate First Commercial Flight On New Runway
Navi Mumbai's long-awaited airport project is set to achieve a historic milestone on Sunday as it welcomes its first-ever commercial aircraft. IndiGo is expected to operate the inaugural flight, which will touch down on the newly constructed runway 08/26 around noon, according to a Times Now report.
Full Commercial Operations By March 2025
The airport is on schedule to commence full commercial operations, including passenger and cargo services, by the end of March 2025. The facility is currently undergoing the final stages of commissioning.
Last October, the airport hosted its first landing, when the Indian Air Force successfully flew an Airbus C-295 to the site. According to The Times of India, this marked a significant step forward in the airport's development.
Preparations For Civilian Aircraft Landings
Before handling large commercial jets, the airport must implement advanced navigation systems, unlike the military aircraft that can operate on simpler landing setups. These systems include the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI), which are crucial for ensuring safe descents. A senior pilot explained that such technology is essential for civilian flights but unnecessary for military planes.
Two weeks ago, the airport, in partnership with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), completed flight calibration of the PAPI equipment for runway 08/26. This system helps pilots maintain the correct angle of descent as they approach the runway.
Air Traffic Control Coordination Between Airports
During the inaugural flight, air traffic control will be a joint effort between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai airports. Mumbai's controllers will manage the aircraft until it descends to 3,900 feet, after which Navi Mumbai's tower controllers will take over. On takeoff, the process will reverse, with Navi Mumbai managing the flight up to 2,000 feet before handing control back to Mumbai.
The two airports, located just 15 kilometres apart, enable close coordination. Once Navi Mumbai Airport begins handling significant traffic, expected by 2026, it will operate an independent air traffic control system.
Enhanced Connectivity For The New Airport
The government has outlined a detailed connectivity plan under its "Gati Shakti" initiative. This includes road, rail, and metro links to provide easy access to both Navi Mumbai Airport and Mumbai city. Earlier this year, former Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed that the airport remains on track to begin full-scale operations by March 2025.
This landmark event marks a new chapter in Navi Mumbai's aviation journey, promising enhanced connectivity and economic growth for the region.
