Adani, in a post on X, shared: "Ahead of the inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport on 8 Oct, I met with our differently-abled colleagues, construction workers, women staff, engineers, artisans, fire fighters and the guards who helped bring this vision to life."
Second Major Airport for Mumbai Region
The Navi Mumbai International Airport will serve as the second key airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Planned in five phases, the facility is designed to handle massive passenger and cargo traffic once fully operational.
According to projections, NMIA will be capable of managing up to 90 million passengers annually and 3.2 million metric tonnes of cargo, placing it among the largest aviation hubs in Asia. The Ministry of Civil Aviation's latest data notes that India currently operates 162 airports nationwide.
Easy Access Routes to Navi Mumbai Airport
The airport will be accessible via seven major routes, connecting South Mumbai, the eastern and western suburbs, Thane, Mira Road, and the Kalyan-Dombivli-Ambernath belt.
Depending on the chosen route, the distance from Mumbai to the airport ranges between 34 and 45 kilometers, with travel time typically spanning 70 to 95 minutes. At present, connectivity is available through Atal Setu, Palm Beach Road, Thane-Belapur Road, and the Airoli corridor.
Nearest Railway Stations and Future Metro Link
The closest railway station to NMIA is Targhar, constructed but yet to be inaugurated. Passengers can reach it by taking local trains from Seawoods or Belapur on the Uran line and alighting at Targhar.
Additionally, a dedicated Mumbai-Navi Mumbai Metro corridor is under development. However, this link is expected to become operational only by 2029.
DGCA Licence Granted
The DGCA has officially granted NMIA its aerodrome licence, a critical clearance for launching operations.
In a statement, operator Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL) said: "Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) marks a significant milestone with the grant of its Aerodrome Licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The licence, awarded after meeting stringent safety and regulatory requirements, is an essential prerequisite for commencing operations."
With this clearance secured, Navi Mumbai International Airport is ready to transform the aviation landscape of the Mumbai region, easing congestion at the existing Mumbai airport and setting the stage for one of Asia's largest aviation hubs.
