Nariman Point To Mira-Bhayandar In Just 30 Minutes? Mumbai Coastal Road Gets Go-Ahead!

In a landmark development for Mumbai's long-awaited coastal infrastructure, the Dahisar-Bhayandar Coastal Road project has received a major boost, promising to cut travel time between Nariman Point and Mira-Bhayandar to just 30 minutes.

Major Land Handover

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed that after nearly five years of bureaucratic negotiations, the Union Salt Land Department has officially transferred 53.17 acres of land to the Maharashtra state government. This land will be used to construct a 60-meter-wide road connecting Dahisar to Bhayandar, forming a key part of the larger Mumbai Coastal Road project.

"After a long struggle, our persistent follow-up with both central and state departments has paid off," Sarnaik said. "The coastal road dream is now closer to reality." The Dahisar-Bhayandar road will connect with the ongoing Coastal Road being developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), extending the corridor from Nariman Point to Uttan, and further linking suburban areas like Vasai and Virar.

Construction and Funding

The project is already in the implementation stage, with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) awarded the construction contract. The estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crore will be fully funded by the BMC, and the project is expected to be completed within three years.

Originally, the Coastal Road was planned along the shoreline from Uttan to Virar, but local fishing communities opposed the route due to potential impacts on their livelihoods.

Community-Friendly Alignment

In response, the state government revised the alignment to run further inland, now extending from Uttan to Dahisar, passing through Mira-Bhayandar and continuing to the Vasai-Virar region.

"We have addressed the legitimate concerns of the fishing community," Sarnaik said. "The revised alignment balances infrastructure development with respect for traditional livelihoods. It is a win-win for all stakeholders."

Once completed, the extended Coastal Road is expected to transform suburban connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Residents of Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai, and Virar will enjoy a drastically reduced commute to central Mumbai, turning these areas into prominent suburban hubs, Sarnaik added.
