Mumbai's Chheda Nagar Flyover Opens: Slash Your Travel Distance And Beat the Traffic
The Chheda Nagar Flyover officially opened for motorists today by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This new flyover aims to ease the significant traffic congestion often experienced at the Chheda Nagar intersection along the Eastern Express Highway.
Earlier in the day, CM Shinde also participated in the Bhumi Poojan ceremony for a new U-turn bridge connecting to the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Kurla, Mumbai.
The south-north carriageway at Chheda Nagar Junction was constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). This flyover is a vital part of a larger improvement project that began in 2017 to upgrade the Chheda Nagar junction.
The new flyover has already achieved several milestones. Notably, an elevated road was opened in 2022, linking the existing north-south Chheda Nagar flyover to the Amar Mahal flyover. Additionally, another flyover that spans the Chheda Nagar junction, starting from the Indian Oil Corporation on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) to the lanes bound for Thane, was inaugurated in April 2023.
With over 60,000 vehicles passing through the Chheda Nagar junction each day, the final phase of this project-a 680-metre-long south-north flyover-is expected to significantly reduce traffic, especially for those travelling from Amar Mahal to Vikhroli. The Chheda Nagar junction has long been known as a major bottleneck in the area, where vehicles can wait for 20 to 30 minutes, particularly those heading towards Thane.
Additional Projects Initiated By CM Shinde
During the same event, CM Shinde initiated several other projects online:
1. Bhoomipujan for a proposed bridge over the Chunabhatti railway gate.
2. Inauguration of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Playground and Chunabhatti Gateway, along with various other development works.
3. Launch of beautification work at Kamaraj Stadium.
4. Renovation and beautification of Hanuman Mandir Udyan at Tilak Nagar.
5. Start of renovation and beautification work at Nana-Nani Park and Kindergarten within Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Playground, Nehrunagar.
6. Commencement of road cement concreting work in the Kurla Assembly area.
7. Inauguration of the second phase of sewerage works in Mhada Colony, Nehrunagar, and Tilak Nagar.
Also present at the event was the Honorable Balasaheb Thackeray, who inaugurated a hospital near the Kurla East Railway Station. Local leaders such as MLA Mangesh Kudalkar, former MP Rahul Shewale, and numerous Shiv Sena office bearers and activists from the Kurla assembly constituency were in attendance.
