Mumbai's BEST Buses Face Major Decline In Riders: What Is The Reasons Behind The Drop?
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) services have experienced a notable decrease in passenger numbers over the past 15 years. Figures have dropped from 4.4 million in 2009 to just 3.5 million in 2024, marking a reduction of 9,00,000 passengers. This decline has had a considerable impact on revenue and highlights issues with the current bus service.
Frustration Among Passengers

Passengers have voiced their dissatisfaction with the ongoing issues related to bus services. Common complaints include long queues at bus stops, heavy traffic, and extended waiting times. The shortage of buses has become a major concern, affecting many routes.
Significant reductions in bus frequencies and route closures have been reported in areas such as Dadar to Prabhadevi, Worli, Byculla, CSMT, Pratikshanagar, Jijamata Udyan, Nariman Point, Bandra East and West, Borivali, and Wadala. Road and project work has also contributed to service disruptions, forcing passengers to take detours or use alternative routes.
'Save BEST' Campaign
In response to these challenges, BEST has initiated the 'Save BEST' campaign to boost public support and address service issues. This campaign aims to raise awareness and engage Mumbaikars through various outreach efforts, including collaboration with local Ganeshotsav Mandals. The goal is to garner support for enhancing the bus service and addressing the current shortcomings.
Future Challenges
Looking forward, the introduction of new metro and monorail routes in Mumbai is expected to pose additional challenges for BEST. As these new transportation options become available, BEST will need to improve its services to remain competitive and effectively meet the needs of Mumbai's growing population.
