Mumbai Trans Harbour Link: Traffic Violators Beware! AI-Enabled Cameras To Enforce Fines Soon

Authorities are preparing to take stricter action against drivers who frequently break traffic rules on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as Atal Setu. Soon, violators will start receiving challans for their offences as an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is about to be implemented. This advanced system will detect traffic violations, including driving without a seatbelt.

Before its full rollout, the ITMS will undergo live testing, possibly this week, according to The Indian Express. The testing will be conducted by the state transport department to ensure the system's effectiveness. The new system is capable of identifying up to 15 types of traffic violations, including speeding. This will help the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) enforce penalties on rule breakers more efficiently.

At 21.8 kilometres long, with 16 kilometres spanning over the water, MTHL is India's longest sea bridge and already utilises advanced technology to ensure road safety. High-quality, AI-enabled cameras with pan-tilt-zoom functionality give the MMRDA a 360-degree view of the bridge, allowing for the detection of even minor violations. This technology is essential for maintaining safety on such a significant route.

ITMS Features

The ITMS, which cost Rs 520 crore to install, includes several advanced features. These include CCTV surveillance, an under-bridge monitoring system, AI-based video analytics, emergency call boxes, section speed cameras, and speed displays triggered by vehicles. These tools aim to improve traffic control significantly on the bridge.

Strabag Austria, the company responsible for operations, maintenance, and toll collection on the MTHL, is working closely with the MMRDA on the implementation of the ITMS. After testing, all video footage captured by the system will be reviewed by officials from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) at the control and monitoring centre in Chirle.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link has already proven to be a major boon for commuters, reducing travel time between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai by at least one hour. Once the ITMS is fully operational, it is expected to enhance road safety and discipline on the bridge, ensuring smoother journeys for all drivers.
