Rainfall Statistics And Red Alert

Mumbai Rains Flood Safety Tips

In the past 24 hours until 8:30 am today, Mumbai recorded 44 millimetres of rain in the city, 90 millimetres in the eastern suburbs, and 89 millimetres in the western suburbs. The Santacruz observatory has recorded over 1,500 millimetres of rain this month, making it the second-wettest July in Mumbai's history, following last year's 1,771 millimetres.

Casualties And Damage

The heavy rain has resulted in the deaths of four people: three were electrocuted in Pune, and two drowned after falling into Thane's Barvi Dam. The red alert for Mumbai and Palghar remains in effect, with more heavy rain expected. Four rivers in the state, including the Kundalika and Amba, are flowing above the danger mark, posing a risk to nearby villages and settlements.

Seven Practical Tips During Flood-Like Rainfall

1. Stay Indoors and Secure Your Home

Move furniture, appliances, and valuables to higher ground to avoid water damage.
Keep doors and windows closed to prevent water from entering.

2. Keep Updated with Reliable Sources

Follow the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local news channels for real-time weather updates.
Download weather apps and sign up for alerts on your mobile phone.

3. Prepare an Emergency Kit

Include bottled water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, essential medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents in waterproof bags.
Keep the kit in an easily accessible place.

4. Avoid Flooded Roads and Areas

Do not attempt to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. Just 15 cm of moving water can knock you down, and 30 cm can sweep your vehicle away.
Use alternative routes and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.

5. Ensure Device Readiness

Fully charge your mobile phones, laptops, and other essential devices.
Keep power banks and extra batteries charged and ready.

6. Manage Electrical Safety

Turn off the main power supply to your home if flooding is imminent.
Avoid using electrical appliances and outlets if you are in standing water.

7. Stay Connected with Family and Authorities

Use text messages or social media to keep in touch with family and friends and let them know you are safe.
Have a list of emergency contact numbers, including local authorities and utility companies, readily available.
Follow updates and instructions from local authorities and emergency services on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.
