Mumbai Rains: IMD Issues Red Alert For Heavy Rains; Flights, Trains, Road Traffic Likely To Be Disturbed

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Raigad and the ghat regions of Pune and Satara, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 16 hours. Mumbai is under an orange alert due to persistent rain on Monday morning, causing waterlogging in low-lying areas. The weather also affected flight services, with Air India cautioning that operations to and from Mumbai might be impacted.

IndiGo Airlines has advised travellers heading to or from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai to stay updated on their flight status. Temporary disruptions in schedules are possible, so passengers should plan their journeys accordingly. The IMD predicts cloudy skies with heavy rain likely within the next 24 hours.

Mumbai Rains

Impact on Transportation

Mumbai's continuous rain on Monday morning led to flooding in low-lying areas, affecting road traffic, suburban trains, and metro services. Suburban trains on Central and Western lines faced delays of 20-30 minutes. However, Mumbai Metro One resumed normal operations after briefly stopping due to debris.

The island city recorded 95 mm of rainfall, while eastern suburbs received 58 mm and western suburbs got 75 mm. A high tide of 4.21 metres is expected at 3:31 pm. The IMD's forecast includes heavy rainfall for the next day.

Konkan Region's Weather Conditions

The Konkan region and other parts of Maharashtra have been experiencing heavy rainfall for several days. Since June 1, rain-related incidents have resulted in 18 deaths and injured 65 people. The IMD's District Forecast and Warning predicts "heavy to very heavy rainfall" at some places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall in Raigad district and ghat areas of Pune and Satara until Tuesday morning.

An orange alert is also in place for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg districts in Konkan, as well as Amravati, Bhandara, Gondia, and Nagpur districts in Vidarbha. This forecast remains effective until Tuesday morning.

Alerts and Precautions

A red alert signifies "take action," urging authorities to respond immediately. An orange alert indicates "be prepared to take action," requiring readiness for potential emergency measures. Continuous rain has caused flood-like situations in some districts as rivers overflowed. Many low-lying areas along riverbanks are submerged.
