Mumbai-Pune Hyperloop: India’s First Ultra-Fast Corridor Inches Closer To Reality, Travel Time Cut To 25 Mins

India is set to build a 50-kilometre-long hyperloop corridor for commercial transport, following the successful development of a 422-metre test track by IIT Madras. The project, supported by Indian Railways, aims to introduce ultra-high-speed transportation with speeds reaching up to 1,200 kilometres per hour. If completed, this would become the world's longest hyperloop track.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced a third grant of USD 1 million to IIT Madras to support the advancement of hyperloop technology. The first large-scale hyperloop project in India is expected to be the Mumbai-Pune corridor. According to a report by Times Property, this project could reduce travel time between the two cities to just 25 minutes.

Hyperloop Technology

Hyperloop is an advanced transportation system that uses vacuum tubes to move passenger pods at extremely high speeds with minimal air resistance. The pods levitate using electromagnetic technology, which eliminates friction and drag, allowing near-supersonic travel. This innovation could significantly cut travel times. For instance, a 300-kilometre journey, such as Delhi to Jaipur, could take just 30 minutes using hyperloop technology.

IIT Madras Leads

The Avishkar Hyperloop team at IIT Madras has been leading India's research into this technology since 2017. In December 2024, they completed a 422-metre test track, marking a major milestone in India's hyperloop journey. The project has received strong support from the Ministry of Railways and several industry partners.

Future Hyperloop Routes

India is exploring other potential hyperloop routes beyond Mumbai-Pune. A Chennai-Bengaluru corridor is under consideration, which could reduce travel time between the two cities to just 15 minutes.

If successful, India's hyperloop initiative could revolutionise transport by providing a fast, sustainable, and efficient alternative to conventional travel. With continued investment and technological advancements, hyperloop travel could soon become a reality, placing India at the forefront of next-generation transport solutions.
