Mumbai-Pune Expressway Turns 25: Toll Hikes, Travel Time Cuts, And a Vision for the Future

Did you know that the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is India's first high-speed expressway? A section of the expressway was opened to the public in 1999, and by 2002, the entire stretch had become fully operational. This year marks 25 years since the expressway was made available for public use. One end of the expressway connects Mumbai, India's financial capital, while the other end leads to Pune, a major cultural and educational hub.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway was constructed with significant funding provided by then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. According to India.com, the project incurred a cost of approximately Rs 1,630 crore. The expressway spans 94.5 kilometres, starting from the Kalamboli area of Navi Mumbai and ending in Kiwale, Pune.

Constructed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the expressway has drastically reduced travel time between the two cities. It now takes just one hour to travel between Mumbai and Pune, down from the previous three hours.

The toll on the expressway is subject to an annual increase of 6 per cent, with a cumulative increase of 18 per cent every three years. The most recent toll revision occurred in April 2023. The toll for cars was increased from Rs 270 to Rs 320. For vehicles like minibuses and tempos, the toll now stands at Rs 495, up from Rs 420. The toll for two-axle trucks has increased from Rs 585 to Rs 685, while buses are now charged Rs 940, up from the earlier Rs 797. These toll rates are expected to remain unchanged until 2030, with no further revisions scheduled after the next three-year mark in 2026.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is a vital link between two of Maharashtra's major cities, and under the Vision 2047 plan, India aims to expand its network of access-controlled, high-speed national highways to 50,000 kilometres, up from the current 4,000 kilometres. This ambitious plan will help enhance the country's road infrastructure and improve connectivity across regions.
