Mumbai-Pune Expressway Speeding Fines Ignite Online Outrage: Drivers Seek Clarity On Limits
An X user, The Kaipullai, has ignited an online debate over the unclear speed limits and frequent fines on the Mumbai-Pune route, describing the practice as a "money hack" by the government.
In a post shared on Thursday, The Kaipullai criticised the recent installation of speed cameras along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and nearby areas, including Vashi, Panvel, and Pune. The user pointed out that drivers are being fined despite adhering to reasonable speeds, as the authorities have not clearly communicated the speed limits.

"Every time you now travel from Mumbai to Pune, in addition to the toll, always factor in paying Rs 2000 as a speeding fine," the user wrote. The Kaipullai shared a personal experience, recounting how they drove cautiously on cruise control during a recent journey, only to be fined for driving 70 kmph on a road in Panvel where the speed limit was allegedly 60 kmph.
"Looks like our govt has stumbled on an infinite money hack, where they can randomly assign speed limits, without informing the motorists and then keep taking money from them like an infinite ATM," the user commented.
This post has raised concerns among travellers, who feel burdened by unexpected fines and a lack of clear signage on speed limits. Many netizens have echoed similar frustrations, urging authorities to provide clearer information on speed restrictions and to avoid unfairly penalising drivers.
Aviation expert Sanjay Lazar also shared his similar experience, stating that he was fined for driving at 65 kmph a few months ago. He tagged Pune authorities in his post, urging them to review and remove these "speed traps" that cause inconvenience to motorists.
The Transport Ministry has faced previous criticism for high toll charges. In June 2024, entrepreneur Sandeep Manudhane called for the removal of all highway tolls, highlighting that, despite paying multiple taxes for infrastructure development, drivers continue to face high toll fees. "Instead of steadily reducing, and finally ending the same, they are raising the tolls. This is pure extortionate taxation. End all tolls," Manudhane wrote.
One user pointed out the high toll fees, stating that they paid Rs 760 for a 500-kilometre journey, calling it excessive even with the recent road improvements. "Ended up paying Rs 760 toll for a 500 km journey today. A bit excessive methinks even by recent road improvement standards," wrote Birender Dhanoa.
