Mumbai on Red Alert: Heavy Rains Bring City To A Standstill, Claim Two Lives In Vikhroli

Mumbai is once again at the mercy of the monsoon. As the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) hoisted a Red Alert early Saturday, the city woke to pounding rain, flooded streets, and a grim reminder of its vulnerability to nature's fury.

The downpour, relentless through the night, left major junctions like Kings Circle, Andheri, Kurla and Chembur under sheets of water. Railway tracks glistened under ankle-deep pools, and commuters struggled to wade through submerged roads. By morning, travel had slowed to a crawl across India's financial capital.

But the rain did more than cripple movement. In Vikhroli West, a landslide proved fatal when soil and stones from a hillside crashed onto a hut. Two lives were lost, and two others were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where they continue to battle injuries.

IMD Issus Alert

The Red Alert has triggered a citywide safety push. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) urged residents to stay indoors and issued its control-room helpline, 1916, for emergencies. Mumbai Police echoed the call, warning citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and promising heightened readiness.

"Waterlogging and reduced visibility have been reported across several areas. Police are on high alert and ready to help," read the advisory posted online.

Rain Forecast

The forecast offers little relief. While Mumbai and Thane remain under Red and Orange Alerts, Raigad and Ratnagiri are bracing for heavy rainfall through Tuesday. Palghar, too, has been warned of intense showers starting Sunday and stretching into August 19.

For Mumbaikars, the Red Alert is not just a weather forecast - it is a warning etched into daily life. Between clogged roads, flooded homes, and the threat of more landslides, the city is once again navigating its uneasy truce with the monsoon.
