Mumbai Monorail Station Gets A New Name: From Dadar East To Vitthal Mandir
In Mumbai, the monorail station located in Dadar East has undergone a significant change as it has been renamed to Vitthal Mandir. This decision comes after sustained pressure from local residents and political groups. The Maharashtra government officially sanctioned this renaming in March 2024.
The initiative was largely driven by the proximity of the historic Vitthal temple situated beneath the station. Bajrang Deshmukh, representing the Wadala Nagrik Dakshata Samiti, expressed gratitude towards the authorities for responding to their persistent requests. Hoardings acknowledging the government's decision now adorn the area.

Milind Panchal, a leader from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), highlighted his party's role in initiating discussions on this matter years ago. He credited the collective efforts of various political parties, including local MP Rahul Shewale, in supporting the renaming.
The community effort included a signature campaign that garnered nearly 3,000 signatures from local residents of Dadar East. Threats of hunger strikes and protests have underscored the depth of local sentiment in favour of the name change since 2017.
Finally, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officially approved the renaming during its March 2024 meeting, reflecting a culmination of years-long advocacy by the community and political representatives alike.
