The Maharashtra government is gearing up to unveil an extensive plan to develop the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) into a global economic powerhouse. The state government is expected to officially launch this plan on September 12, alongside forming a project management unit with various associated committees.

NITI Aayog's Vision

NITI Aayog has identified MMR as one of four regions with high growth potential, crucial for India's goal of becoming a Rs 4,10,00,000 crore economy. Surat, Varanasi, and Visakhapatnam are the other three regions. Among these, MMR is seen as having the highest growth potential. During a recent meeting with Shinde, NITI Aayog advised the Maharashtra government to focus on seven key growth drivers and attract Rs 10,00,000 to Rs 11,00,000 crore in private sector investment to reach a Rs 83,00,000 crore economy target by 2028.

The state government is also planning to develop major ports such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Vadhavan, Dighi, and Revas, expand Mumbai's international airport, and complete the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport with an investment of Rs 1,600 crore.

Additionally, the shores of the Mithi and Oshiwara rivers will be developed for leisure and tourism, inspired by the Namami Gange project. Overall, the government plans to invest Rs 13,00,000 crore in various sectors and services to drive this ambitious economic transformation.
