Mumbai Metro Yellow Line 2B Set to Begin Train Trials: A Boost For Commuters In Eastern Suburbs

After years of delays, the Yellow Line Mumbai Metro 2B achieved an important milestone on Sunday. The 5.4-kilometre stretch between Diamond Garden in Chembur and Mandale in Mankhurd has now been live-charged, meaning that the overhead wires are fully operational, according to a mid-day report. Train trials are set to begin on April 16, with the date coinciding with the 172nd anniversary of Mumbai's first train services, marking the foundation day of Indian Railways.

This will be the first new Metro line in the eastern suburbs in ten years, following the launch of the Blue Line 1 from Ghatkopar. While the initial deadline for the Yellow Line's operation was set for December 2025, sources have indicated that Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee played a key role in pushing for earlier train trials, closely overseeing the progress of all Metro lines.

Mumbai Metro 2B: Challenges And Progress

The line has faced significant delays, primarily due to the rebidding of the systems tender. However, the stretch covering five stations-Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd, and Mandale Metro-is now ready for operation. The Yellow Line also intersects with the Mumbai Monorail at Chembur.

Mumbai Metro 2B: Trains On The Line

The Yellow Line 2B will feature state-of-the-art six-coach trains manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). These trains, which were first reported by mid-day on November 11, 2023, are designed to be energy-efficient, with a regenerative braking system. The trains feature four doors on each side, making it easier for passengers to board and disembark. There will also be space for commuters to carry bicycles. Additional amenities include mobile charging points, an IP-based announcement system, and advanced surveillance systems for added safety.

Mumbai Metro 2B: Trial Process

The trial phase will begin with basic integration tests, which will assess the rolling stock, signalling systems, and track traction. After this, the trials will simulate actual operational conditions, with the trains loaded with simulated passenger weight to gauge their performance. Once all the tests are complete, a final trial will be conducted under the supervision of the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety before the Metro services are made available to the public.

Mumbai Metro 2B: Future Plans

Once this stretch is fully operational, the second phase of the Yellow Line, covering an 18.2-kilometre stretch from Diamond Garden in Chembur to DN Nagar in Andheri, is expected to open by December 2026. This phase will include 14 additional stations, making the Metro line a major transport option for commuters.
