Mumbai Metro Line-3: The Most Complex Underground Metro Launches This Month; Key Details Inside

Mumbai is on the brink of a major transportation upgrade as India's most ambitious underground metro project, Mumbai Metro Line-3, is set to begin operations by the end of September. Officially named the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line, or Aqua Line, this 33.5-kilometre route has encountered numerous challenges but is now ready to transform Mumbai's transit system.

The new metro line will link significant business and entertainment areas, such as Nariman Point, Fort, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), SEEPZ, and MIDC. This development is expected to greatly enhance the efficiency of commuting in the city.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed that the initial phase of the metro line, which spans from Aarey Colony to BKC, will become operational by the end of this month. "We plan to start the Mumbai Metro Line-3 by the end of this month," Shinde stated, as reported by the Deccan Herald. He added, "We will now start with the first phase; the second phase will follow."

The second phase, extending from BKC to Colaba, is projected to be completed by 2025. When fully operational, Mumbai Metro Line-3 is expected to accommodate approximately 1.7 million passengers each day, with trains running every 3 to 4 minutes. Each train will have the capacity to carry around 2,500 passengers.

Managed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), the project is estimated to cost around Rs 38,000 crore. The new metro line will provide a one-hour commute from Colaba to SEEPZ and will operate in both north-south and south-north directions, similar to the city's suburban railway networks.

The route will include stations close to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Churchgate, and Dadar, and will integrate with the existing suburban rail system. It will connect to over 30 educational institutions, 13 hospitals, 14 religious sites, and more than 30 recreational facilities. This project aims to enhance access to areas that were previously underserved by the suburban rail network, including Kalbadevi, Girgaum, Worli, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Moreover, the new metro line is expected to reduce congestion on suburban railways by 15 per cent and will integrate with other metro lines, the monorail, and ST Bus Services.
