Mumbai Metro Line 3 Phase 2A Begins Operations, BKC to Worli in 15 Minutes

Phase 2A, the second operational leg of Mumbai's first totally underground metro corridor, the Aqua Line (Metro Line 3), has opened, offering a quick and direct underground connection between the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli over a distance of 9.77 km. While the final 33.5-kilometer route between Worli and Cuffe Parade is presently being built and should open in August, this phase goes into operation on Saturday.

With a ceremonial ride between BKC and Siddhivinayak stations on Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially opened Phase 2A. "This corridor from Cuffe Parade to Aarey Seepz is the longest single-line underground metro in India," Fadnavis said in a statement following the occasion.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 Phase 2A Begins Operations BKC to Worli in 15 Minutes

The commencement of Phase 2A shows our dedication to creating top-notch infrastructure. In the presence of Prime Minister Modi, we intend to open the entire corridor in August. By 2027, we want to have expanded the metro system by 100 kilometres across the MMR.

With trains arriving every six minutes and twenty seconds, commuters can now reach Acharya Atre Chowk from BKC in just over fifteen minutes thanks to Phase 2A's operation. Depending on the distance, ticket rates range from Rs 10 to Rs 40. Eight trains will make a total of 244 journeys every day.

Important locations, such as the well-known Siddhivinayak Temple and cultural sites like Shivaji Park and Ravindra Natya Mandir, are connected by the recently opened stations-Dharavi, Shitaladevi, Dadar West, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk.

According to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), the corridor's increased accessibility is also anticipated to increase ridership from business centres like BKC and Worli.

Fadnavis hailed the project's engineering efforts, referring to it as "an engineering marvel." He also highlighted the difficulties of tunnelling beneath the Mithi River and building in crowded areas like Dadar and Dharavi, where developers had to deal with slums, heritage structures and high groundwater levels.

In October 2024, Prime Minister Modi officially opened the first section of Metro Line 3, which runs from Aarey to BKC. It is anticipated that the last section, which would connect Worli and Cuffe Parade via Mumbai Central and CSMT, will open in August. When finished, the 33.5-kilometer line-which will have 27 underground stations-should relieve up to 15% of the strain on Western Railway during peak hours.

The entire corridor will have several advantages, such as cutting the travel time from Cuffe Parade to Aarey to less than an hour, relieving traffic on roads like Lady Jamshedji and Annie Besant, and linking underprivileged communities like Kalbadevi and Girgaon. The maximum fare for the whole route will be Rs 60.

"This metro line will remove nearly 5 lakh vehicles from the roads, saving massive amounts of fuel, energy and most importantly, commuters' time," said Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who accompanied Fadnavis on the first voyage. We encourage residents to embrace these environmentally beneficial options as Mumbai implements extensive green public transport.

To reduce surface-level vibrations, Metro Line 3 uses cutting-edge technologies like autonomous trains, full-height station screen doors and the Twin Booted Low Vibration Track System. At BKC, it will eventually connect to the Mumbai Monorail, additional metro lines, and the soon-to-be Bullet Train.

Fadnavis added, "Work remained stalled until 2022," acknowledging previous delays brought on both legal and environmental concerns. The project resumed once the Shinde government took office, and our current goals are to have 50 km operational by the next year and an additional 50 kilometres by 2027.

Although some stations, such as Dadar, may need a short walk due to their lack of seamless connection with the suburban railway network, MMRC officials promised that last-mile connectivity enhancements are planned to allay commuter worries.
