Mumbai Metro Blue Line 1: Faster Trains, Shorter Routes – What Commuters Need To Know

In a new initiative aimed at reducing congestion, the Reliance Mumbai Metro Blue Line 1 has begun operating select trains in a shorter loop between Andheri and Ghatkopar, according to a Midday report. The move, which started on Thursday, is based on passenger feedback and aims to improve train frequency on the overcrowded stretch.

During peak hours, the highest passenger load is between Andheri and Ghatkopar. Instead of running all trains to Versova, some services will now operate only between these two busy stations. A Mumbai Metro Blue Line 1 official confirmed that the experiment is being closely monitored to assess its impact.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has made progress in clearing debris and reducing barricades at Ghatkopar station. On Thursday, officials assured that piling work at the station will be completed by the end of March, reducing obstructions and improving passenger movement. Last month, concerns were raised about overcrowding at platform 1 due to construction work, which had led to stampede-like situations.

"Debris has been fully cleared, and barricades have been minimised. Phase II of station improvement work is actively underway to enhance passenger amenities," an MRVC official stated.

Providing an update on the timeline, the official said, "Foundation work for PW-3 on platform 1 is complete, and barricading was removed on 15 February. Pile foundation for the elevated deck (PW-1 & PW-2) began the same day, with 28 out of 45 pilings completed. Work on a 12-metre-wide south foot overbridge started on 25 February, with 26 out of 70 pilings done. The remaining piling work is expected to finish by March 2025, with caps and pillars completed by April 2025."

Ghatkopar station is being upgraded following reports about safety concerns and overcrowding, particularly since it serves both the Mumbai local train network and Metro Line 1. A report from August 2019 highlighted the risks at platform 1, prompting intervention from former MP Manoj Kotak and then Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

Commuter Reactions

Paresh Nagrani, a regular commuter: "Crowding at Ghatkopar station is out of control. On Thursday, the foot overbridge was packed, leaving no space to walk. The station urgently needs better connectivity and Metro upgrades."

Ranjan Jaiswal, a daily passenger: "Ghatkopar sees huge crowds. The railways must ensure upgrades are completed on time, as even small delays impact thousands of commuters."

Hrishikesh Kadam, a Ghatkopar West resident: "Authorities must complete key work before the monsoon. A roof over the station is also needed to protect passengers from heat and rain."

Robert D'Souza, a Vikhroli resident: "Work at Ghatkopar station has been ongoing for too long. The station needs an additional foot overbridge at the CSMT end to handle increasing crowds."

Subhash Gupta from Yatri Sangh Mumbai: "Despite visits from railway officials, Ghatkopar remains chaotic. The railways must act fast to prevent dangerous situations like stampedes."

Ananya Shah, a Mulund commuter: "The CSMT end of the station, where the ladies' compartment stops, is always packed. Authorities must deploy more police to control the rush."
